People in Sayanogorsk commemorate the victims of political repressions

On Monday, August 29, a commemoration will be held at the Wall of Remembrance in Sayanogorsk, which is dedicated to the victims of political repressions. As per tradition representatives of authorities, public organizations, as well as young people and representatives of the elder generation come together on this specific day.

During the meeting, which will start at 11 a.m., citizens lay down flowers and light candles at the Wall of Remembrance. Those who once had to suffer from Stalin‘s repressions and their relatives remain in a minute’s silence to commemorate people, who lost their lives during the totalitarian system.

Initiators of the Day of Memory and commemoration to the honor of the victims of political repressions in Sayanogorsk are members of the „Memorial“ organization, who suffered during the period of Stalinism themselves. It was just at the end of the month of August, when, in the middle of the past century, they brought deported special settlers from the Ukraine to the Babik valley.

Moreover, the ukase about the resettlement of all Germans from the Volga districts, which gained notoriety, was passed on the 28th of August 1941. In the USSR this date is being considered as the beginning of mass deportations of peoples.
