In the opinion of the human rightists the monument dedicated to the „Leader of Peoples“ is going to become a source of political tension in the region
The chairman of the Krasnoyarsk „Memorial“ organization of historical illumination and human rights - Aleksei Babiy, addressed himself to the mayor of Krasnoyarsk - Edcham Akbulatov, with an open letter, in which he points out that the erection of a Josef Stalin Monument in town is inacceptable with regard to the image of the city.
Let us recall that a group of deputies of the Krasnoyarsk city council prepared this week an appeal to the governor of the region - Viktor Tolokonskij, the head of the city - Edcham Akbulatow, the speakers of the regional legislative assembly and the city council of Krasnoyarsk requesting them to give their permission for the erection of a Josef Stalin bust in the capital of the region. They justify the necessity of the erection of the statue with the festivities on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War.
In his request to the mayor Babiy expresses his fear that the monument of the „Leader of peoples“ will become a source of permanent political tension and might inhibit the winter universiade 2019 which is supposed to take place in the city.
„The erection of the bust will involve an irreparable damage to the image of the city of Krasnoyarsk. It cannot be excluded that this might put into question the realization of the universiade”, - it is said in the letter.
Aleksey Babiy also mentions information given by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, as well as the regional FSB agency, according to which the number of people, who suffered from Stalin’s repressions in Krasnoyarsk Territory is counted in hundreds of thousands. Among them were 12.000 people from Krasnoyarsk, who were shot by firing squads in 1937-1938 according to the so-called limits, which were personally signed by Josef Stalin.
