What is the Yenisseystroy?

Yenisseystroy - that is no ITL ( = reform labour camp); it rather stands for the entire central administration of the GULag (main camp administration), - similar to the Dalstroy (= NKVD Far-East Construction Combine), for example.

The main camp administration of the Yenisseystroy existed from 1949 to 1953, with its headquarters in Krasnoyarsk and under the direction of Major General Panyukov.

The central administration formally comprised 10 camps (reform labour camps). However, they came into existence at different times, and, in fact, only a few of them were in operation: the Tayosh camp (Kansk district), the Tuimsk camp (in Khakassia) and the Krasnoyarsk camp (just as much known as "Kraslag Yenisseystroy"), which were joined in the "DS", together with 2-3 smaller ones.

The Tayoshlag and the Tuimlag were associated with a mine. In Krasnoyarsk prisoners of the Yenisseystroy camps built the "Sibstal" (steel works) and, apparently, an uranium factory, as well.

The "Sharashka" (a special prison for scientists, engineers, technicians) OTB-1 (Special Technology Office 1), which was situated in Krasnoyarsk and carried out project work for the Yenisseystroy, was also part of the Yenisseystroy. The inmates of the OTB-1 were geologists and steel workers, among them also university graduates and many doctors of science.
