Exile/Camp Report given by Alexander Ivanovich Schnaider

On the 10.03.1938 the Communists arrested the secretary of the village Soviet in the village of GATTUNG, canton UNTERWALDEN, Autonomous Republic of the Volga-Germans:

JOHANNES (IVAN) Nikolayevich SCHNAIDER (by error SCHNEIDER), 1899-1938, native of Gattung, without party membership. He was taken into the remand prison of UNTERWALDEN, from where he was sent into prison in ENGELS. He was sentenced by the "Dvoyka" for section 58-10 (anti-Soviet agitation) on the 21.07.1938 and shot dead in ENGELS on the 22.08.1938. He was posthumously rehabilitated by the department of public prosecution in the Saratov region on 17.08.1989 (in accordance with a decree of the USSR Supreme Soviet Presidium dated 16.01.1989).

At the beginning of September 1941 the Communists deported his wife and children from GATTUNG:

The family had to get off the train at KAMARCHAGA station, MANSK district.

From there they were sent to a village called NOVOMIKHAYLOVKA, situated in the same district, 5 km ahead of the village of Kiyay.

In January 1942 WENDELIN SCHNAIDER was chased into the "Trud-Army" (= Labour Army), to the KRASLag, from where they later sent him to the USOLLag (Ussolsk reform labour camp in the Sverdlovsk region). After the "Trud-Army" they left him in exile in the settlement of UST-YASVA, in the district of KRASNOVISHERSK, MOLOTOV region. Later he lived in the Volga area, from where he left for Germany end of the 80s.

In summer 1942 MARGARITA SCHNAIDER and her youngest son were chased north to the station of BAKHTA, TURUKHANSK district (on the right bank of the river Yenissey). About 15 Volga-German families came to this place, and they were all from GATTUNG.

In BAKHTA died AGNESSA MOOR. MARGARITA SCHNAIDER worked there as attendant in the kolkhoz.

The commandant's office was situated in the settlement of MIRNY. At the beginning MAYBORODA held the place of the commandant, from 1948 this was lieutenant CHEPURNOY. The children from BAKHTA went to school in MIRNY.

In 1950 the commandant allowed ALEXANDER SCHNAIDER to go to KRASNOYARSK for studies. He was admitted to the technical (engineering) school for the construction of locomotives.

In autumn 1953 MARGARITA SCHNAIDER, too, was allowed to leave for KRASNOYARSK, where she arrived on the 20.10.1953 and lived there not far from the Krasnoyarsk machine-building factory. She, as well as ALEXANDER SCHNAIDER, were released from exile on the 23.01.1956.

ALEXANDER SCHNAIDER was rehabilitated by the UVD (Administration of Internal Affairs) of the Krasnoyarsk region on the 19.01.1993, MARGARITA SCHNAIDER by the UVD, Saratov region, on the 17.05.2000. The registration card giving evidence of the prisoner transport is missing at the UVD of the Saratov region.
