Press release

The first volume of the Books of Memory in commemoration of the victims of political reprisals in the Krasnoyarsk region appeared.

The presentation of the first volume of the Books of Memory in commemoration of the victims of political reprisals will take place in the Museum of Literature (ul. Lenina, 66) on the 27th of October 2004 at 4.00 pm.

In the Krasnoyarsk region 60.000 people were charged and sentenced for political resons. As from the 23.08.1937 to the 15.06.1938 alone, no less than 11.620 people were executed, no less than 5.439 individuals sent to forced-labor camps. Hundreds of thousands of inmates passed through the KrasLag, NorilLag, GorLag, YeniseyStroy and other camps – the railway line from Salekhard to Igarka was built on the bones of prisoners in the literal sense of the word. In fact, the Krasnoyarsk region became the prison for entire peoples – they forced more than 500.000 special settlers to get into cattle waggons and sent them to this region, where they were predestined to do slave work and die a painful death. Germans from the volga and from the Ukraine, pontic Greeks, Lithuanians, Letts, Estonians, Ukrainians, Finns, Circassians, Poles, Belorussians, Russians, Kalmuks …

The first volume comprises 6.000 biographic details on people from Krasnoyarsk, who had a charge pending against them in the Krasnoyarsk region and whose surnames start with the letters “A” and “B”, as well as secientific and journalistic articles and reference material. The book is the result of the joint efforts and work done by the Krasnoyarsk Regional Committee of Archival Matters, the States Archives of the Krasnoyarsk region, the Krasnoyarsk regional administration for the protection of the social interests of the Krasnoyarsk polulation, the Krasnoyarsk “Memorial” organization of historical illumination and education, human rights and charity, the Krasnoyarsk regional administration of the Federal State Security, the Krasnoyarsk regional State Administration of the Interior, the Krasnoyarsk regional Public Prosecutors and the “Izdatelskiye proyekty” publishing house. The book is going to become part of the stock of the Krasnoyarsk regional libraries.

The first volume of the Books of Memory in commemoration of the victims of political reprisals was published in the year of the 70th anniversary of the region. In the history of this region there were lots of sad and gloomy events; we must never forget about them, just as we must never forget about the people, who did a good deal for the region, but nevertheless were punished unjustly.
