The Krasnoyarsk „Memorial“ organization celebrates its 25th anniversary
A quarter of a century ago, on the 9th of March 1988, the Krasnoyarsk „Memorial“ Organization of historical illumination and human rights started to work. Chief aims of the organization are the commemoration and immortalization of victims of political repressions, the restoration to the full extent of historic truth about political persecutions, the research of reasons and consequences, as well as participation in the rehabilitation process of all those, who had to suffer from political repressions.
Within 25 years the fates of more than 100 000 politically repressed persons
were reconstructed, whose destinies were closely connected to the Krasnoyarsk
Territory.
In collaboration with the Archival Agency of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the
archives of the FSB distract administration in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, as
well as the State Administration of the Russian MVD in the Krasnoyarsk Territory
and the Public Prosecution Department of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, 11 volumes
of the Book of Memory were published , memorial stones erected, memorial tablets
fixed in towns and district centers of the region. Moreover the organization is
engaged in lectures for students of schools and universities and historical
illumination. Hundreds of articles were published in regional and district
newspapers, thousands of interviews with victims of political repressions were
recorded.
15 years ago, on the 9th of March 1998 the Krasnoyarsk „Memorial“ Organization started its own website (memorial.krsk.ru), which won the All-Russian Competition „Internet 1998“ the very same year. The webpage is now being published in three languages; it contains about 11000 texts, as well as photos, audio and video information. The results of the efforts and work of the Krasnoyarsk “Memorial” Organization are being presented on this website.
„Memorial’s“ work will not come to an end for a long time yet. The fates of about one million victims of political repressions are closely connected to the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Numerous towns and district centers of the region still do not dispose of any memorial stones or tablets. The main problem, however, is that our society has not yet learned its lessons from those terrible times. And this means that everything could happen once again.
